College Operations - Technical Services - Biosciences
This post will be available from the 1st October 2018 on a permanent basis and is based at the Streatham Campus in Exeter.
The College of Life and Environmental Sciences wishes to recruit a Laboratory Manager to support the day-to-day management of the Aquatic Resources Centre (ARC).
You will work with technical, research and academic staff and help coordinate a broad range of teaching and research activity. The ARC is a world-class facility containing multiple aquarium rooms that house as many as 20-30 species of aquatic organisms at any one time. Each particular species lending itself as a suitable research tool to investigate and improve our understanding of basic biological systems, how chemicals entering the environment affect aquatic organisms, monitoring current and predicting future global impacts of ocean acidification and climate change and more recently measuring aspects of human health.
This is an exciting opportunity as the successful candidate will be at the interface of all research and teaching activity in the facility and have a wide interaction within Biosciences. You will need to have experience of working in a similar research environment, be an experienced technical manager and be able to form productive working relationships with other technical and professional services staff, stakeholders and suppliers in maintaining overall operations of the facility.
You will be responsible for training of new students and staff (including helping write operating guidelines/policies) to ensure a high quality of support is maintained and that local rules and home office legislation are complied with by all users of the facility at all times.
We ask that you are highly motivated and enjoy working with students. Finally, you will be expected to line manage a small number of staff within the ARC and will act as the deputy manager in the absence of the facility manager.
You will possess a degree (or equivalent experience) in Bioscience, Environmental Science or a related discipline and will be able to demonstrate experience of working in teams and independently, be able to maintain organised and accurate records and be an excellent communicator.
